BPW London Welcomes New Members: Eunsil Choi, Sandra Drozd and Cindy Johnston
BPW London is proud to announce three new members. Eunsil Choi and Sandra Drozd were inducted into BPW at the May 2009 general meeting and Cindy Johnston will be inducted at a later date. Eunsil is also a Young BPW.
Eunsil Choi
Eunsil is a Senior Manager at Sumagen Canada where she is a project manager of drug development. She was born in Korea and has been living in Canada since 2007.
Sandra Drozd
Sandra is a partner at the law office of Lerners LLP. Her specialities are personal injury litigation, insurance defence litigation and health law.
Cindy Johnston
Cindy works at Johnston & Company where she is an Administrator performing the following duties: firm accounting, technology support (software and hardware), document preparation, client and supplier contact, etc.

Theresa Russelo, former producer of our Newsletter has been recognized
Theresa Russelo Research Development & Services - University of Western Ontario
As faculty and staff involved in the research enterprise know well, the first point of contact for grant applications is key in ensuring a successful outcome. And that means Theresa Russelo.
As the Pre-Award Grants Facilitator, Russelo is responsible for assisting faculty in ensuring grant applications comply with regulations set by funding agencies. It is this funding help – the bulk of which is used to support student participation and training in research – where Russelo makes a significant contribution to Western.
“Theresa is a pleasure to work with. She is courteous on the phone and in person, and is always willing to answer questions and share her expertise with faculty and staff,” says Faculty of Education staff member Karen Kueneman.
“She is adept at communicating to researchers the complex rules and regulations associated with the various finding agencies and works hard to assist faculty members in navigating around potential roadblocks.”
Each fall, Research Development and Services processes approximately 500-600 grant applications and Russelo has consistently demonstrated her commitment during this period, working long days and weekends when necessary.
In addition, she has volunteered personal time to assist the major granting agencies in developing more effective application submission systems. Last year Russelo spearheaded a pilot project that used Western as a test institution for ResearchNet, a new on-line application submission system of the Canadian Institutes of Health.
“Theresa is always professional and friendly,” says FIMS Dean Tom Carmichael. “She has been known to drop everything and give her undivided attention when someone walks through her door, even amidst piles of outgoing grant applications sitting on her desk.”
Along with helping so many others, Russelo is also committed to her own personal development and growth. In addition to juggling career and family commitments, she is currently enrolled in the Canadian Institute of Management (CIM) program and is expected to complete it this year.

Mom Salary Survey by Doris Hall, National 1st VP
Mom Salary Survey – Stay-at-Home Moms Would Earn $135,661 in Canada
An interesting survey done by Salary.com, Inc., a provider of payroll and management solutions which determines that the time mothers spend performing the 10 most popular “mom job functions” would equate to an annual cash compensation in Canada of $135,661. “Mom job functions” include laundry machine operator, janitor, van driver, housekeeper, computer operator I, cook, day care teacher, facilities manager, psychologist and Chief Executive Officer. The survey reports that “the salary was $135,661 for Stay-at-Home Moms and an additional $83,863 for Working Moms in Canadian Dollars.”
The survey found that “not only are working moms outsourcing less and doing more themselves, but they’re also spending more time on the higher-paying jobs such as facilities managers, CEO and psychologist.” This year, the working mom had 17 hours of overtime in addition to her full time hours both at work and as a mom. According to the Salary.com survey, the working mom puts in over a 92-hour work week when you combine her full-time job, mom hours and mom overtime.

BPW London 2009 - 2010 Planning Meeting: June 13, 2009
Lianne Armstrong, BPWL's Programs/Planning Chair invites all BPW members to the Planning meeting to design the Program for the upcoming year. During the meeting we will discuss topics, speakers and a theme. We are just finishing the 2008 - 2009 successful program of "Making a Difference Our Way" and it's time to set the course for the next season.

An Evening of Wine, Jazz & Reality - FACE IT - June 12, 2009
Another fun fundraiser from the organizers of Wine, Women & Shopping…
On June 12th, Nancy Kirwin, BPW London member, and Susan Regier are once again Celebrating Sisterhood with an open house fundraiser to support Dr. Annette Richard and her FACE IT program, which helps those facing a breast cancer diagnosis. Her free program offers emotional support, education, and unique tools not available elsewhere – and Dr. Richard does it all for free. For more information about the FACE IT program, check out her Web site at www.faceitlondon.com.
To help raise awareness and funds for this program, the Carolinian Winery is hosting our open house event, An Evening of Wine, Jazz & Reality, from 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM. The evening includes free wine sampling, gourmet food sampling, a delectable dessert, and jazz entertainment on the patio of the Winery. Tickets are available…the cost is $35.00 or two tickets for $60.00.

Your Lipstick Can Change the World
Changing lives of women and children around the world....Mary Kay will donate $1 from the sale of Mary Kay Creme Lipstick (in shades Pink Passion and Gingerbread) to the Mary Kay Ash Charitable Foundation. Proceeds will benefit the Foundation's efforts to support women living with cancer and address violence against women.

Executive Meeting Minutes
Below is a summary of the April 2009 London Executive Minutes. At the end ofthe summary there is a link to the complete version of the minutes.
Business Arising
- Linda Davis reviewed the list of positons for nominations to the 2009-2010 BPWL Executive.
- Doris Hall proposed that BPW London sponsor a Human Trafficking event in the Fall.
- Megan Popovic reported on the Young BPW event held in March and plan is in the works for more events. Megan will also be contacting National Young BPW VP. Megan proposed a new fee structure for Young BPW members and the Board accepted this proposal.
- Laura Noble (representing our President) and Sheila Crook will the Provincial delegates and Conference with Linda Davis and Norma Yau as alternates. At the National AGM, Laura Noble will the delegate and Sheila Crook the alternate.
Dinner Meeting
- Mary McBrearty will present the budget for approval.
- Nominations and installation officers.
- Meeting will focus on the discussion of the Provincial and National resolutions.
Reports
- Membership: 30 members. Sandra Drozd was accepted a new member.
- Young BPW: Megan Popovic will prepare some PowerPoint slides on the March Young BPW event. The slides will be presented to the members at the May meeting.
- Resolutions: Discussion about a strategy to address the poverty initiative of the Ontario goverment.
- Professional Development: Sheila Crook will take a few minutes at each meeting to discuss the web sites and show members how to use each.
- District/Provincial: Doris Hall and Linda Davis will be attending a Kitchener-Waterloo April meeting and Sheila Crook and Laura Noble will be attending an April Cambridge meeting.
- National: BPW Canada is in the process of adding more membership benefits
- International: Doris Hall mentioned the International President held a seminar for coutry presidents.

This second level course builds on the skills and techniques taught in our basic mediation course. Small group coaching is provided so that participants have the opportunity to apply the concepts to the reality of resolving conflict.
Mediation Beyond the Basics is a 21 hour course available only for those who have successfully completed Fundamentals of Mediation at Munn Conflict Resolution Services or an equivalent mediation course approved by the ADR Institute of Ontario.
