Women Moving Forward Program: 2009 - 2010 BPWL Program

On June 13, 2009, BPWL members met to design the 2009- 2010 program. The theme for the year will be Women Moving Forward.

Thank you to the Planning Committee members: Winn Barnett, Linda Davis, Sheila Crook, Doris Hall, Rose Kuchynski, Norma Yau, Carole Orchard, Colleen Sharen, Laura Noble and Lianne Armstrong for designing the program for the year as well as finding and booking speakers.

• September 15, 2009 - Networking - 1 + 1: Networking From the Inside-OUT. Speaker: Allison Graham, Elevate | Seminars + Strategic Development Inc. and author of "Business Cards to Business Relationships: Building the Ultimate Network".
  
  
• October 20, 2009 - Job Search: Then and Now. Speaker: Barb Smith, Job Search Coach. Looking for a job, a career change or rejoining the workforce? This talk will provide key tips on how to get the most from job search and how it has changed overtime.
  
  
• November 17, 2009 - Breaking Through the Grass Ceiling: Barriers to Rural Women. The talk will focus on some of the socio-structural challenges to contemporary rural women. Speaker: Helene Cummings, Associate Professor, Division of Sociology and Family Studies, Brescia University College.
  
  
• December 8, 2009 - Silent Auction & Social: Last Minute Stocking Stuffers & Gifts. Guests, friends, spouses, significant others welcome. N.B. This is the 2nd Tuesday of the month. President's Message: Carole Orchard

As our weather starts to change and the crispness of fall starts to appear in our late summer evenings, a strange transference occurs, a renewal of our commitments to our work-life balance begins as we set up our scheduled activities for the forthcoming school year. This year with the economic downturn, people are still concerned about their future and prudent planning of expenditures is at the forefront of our thinking. In such times our social conscience of issues affecting women should also be a concern.

In June, a number of our club members turned out to plan for our forthcoming dinner meetings. Ideas around key areas affecting women, and needing our attention were generated. And of course, potential speakers to bring us with the latest information related to each came forth. We hope the program will stimulate you to not only come yourselves to our dinner meetings, but also to bring others to join our club.

To date our membership for the 2009-2010 year is at 28 and climbing.

Our club will be a sponsor of a Human Trafficking event to be held in October. An issue near and dear to our hearts, and thanks to Doris Hall who serves on the planning committee, our logo will be prominently displayed at the event. Mark your calendars for this event to be held on October 5, 2009.

We also will be actively working in planning for the 2012 BPW Convention here in London. As host club, Linda Davis and Sheila Crook have agreed to co-chair the planning committee, and will be seeking your input into their creative ideas to sell our city and of course plan a convention that will be long after remembered. One project, to raise funds to support this event, will be the compilation of a cookbook of all the recipes used for our Annual Barbecues. Thanks to Linda Dawson’s daughter we have many photos to choose from to enrich this compilation. Now Laura Noble and I just have to get the ‘meat’ to fill in the recipes. We hope to have this book ready for our December fundraiser. So you might want to consider buying a few copies for seasonal gifts for friends and family.

The Executive committee is also finalizing a letter to the CRTC based on the resolution that our club passed. This resolution was not passed at the national annual meeting, but we feel the issue is of significance to women and will be sending a letter from our club, encouraging other supportive clubs to do the same.

As you can see the Executive Committee has been busy over the summer, and we hope that our efforts will provide you with the environment reflecting the pillars of BPW that draws you into our club and hopefully, makes you want to continue to be active members.

We hope to see you all at our 2009-2010 dinner meetings.

The Truth is Not Sexy - Human Trafficking Event - October 5, 2009

The London and Area Anti-Trafficking Group (LAAT) is presenting an event: The Truth is Not Sexy. BPW London is also sponsoring this event.

Key Note Speaker: Victor Malarek author of The Natashas - Inside the Global Sex Trade and The John's Sex for Sale and the Men Who Buy It.

Location: University of Western Ontario, U.C.C. Council Chambers, Room 315.

Time: 7:00 p.m - 9:00 p.m.

Break Away Faciliators: Victor Malarek, Trevor Hinds (Program Director, Changing Ways, London), John Fenn (Co-founder John Schools, Toronto) and Marty VanDoren (Superintendent - Retired - Human Trafficking Awareness Coordinator.

There will be a discussion of the "industry" that engages women as objects, young boys and girls as cheap labour.

BPW Canada AGM (June 19 - 20, 2009) Delegate Report by Laura Noble

A Mentoring for Success Workshop was conducted on the Friday evening. Gabriella Cononica, 1st Vice President, BPW International (BPWI) introduced the topic of mentoring. Maureen Craig McIntosh, Chair BPWI Mentoring Task Force, shared her mentoring experiences and BPW Calgary’s Mary O’Sullivan-Andersen and Lia Robinson spoke of their club’s mentoring program. Many of the tools discussed will be on the BPW Canada's web Member’s Only section. The mentoring program used by BPW Calgary is very similar to the one setup by Linda Davis during the 2008-2009 BPW London season.

An open session of the mid-term meeting of the National Board of Directors was conducted Saturday morning. Workopolis presented their concept for the BPWC niche-site.

Saturday’s luncheon speaker was Linda Middaugh of Canadian Women for Women in Afghanistan. A key part of her talk was the theme of Education = Peace and Education is Empowerment. Also at the Saturday luncheon was the Minister Responsible for the Status of Women, Helena Guergis.

Saturday afternoon began the AGM with greetings from BPWI President Liz Benham and Regional Coordinator Jill Worobec.

Gabriella Cononica presented the International Membership drive: 1 + 1 followed by Joan Macklin, Federation Promotion Co-Chair, and her 1+ 1 presentation how it will be working in Canada and the prizes that can be won by both Clubs and members.

Congratulations to Sheila Crook was appointed, as a representative of Canada on BPW's International Equal Pay Campaign.

This was my first AGM and I encourage others to attend such events as it is wonderful meeting women not only from BPW clubs across Canada but internationally. The experience, the learning, the mentoring, the laughs and yes the work is what BPW is all about – all very rewarding. On a personal note would like to thank Sheila Crook and Karin Gorgerat (BPW Trenton) for their support during the resolution process.

Message from Federation Promotion Co-chairs Joan Macklin and Terri Parent. At the BPW Canada Annual General Meeting held in Toronto on June 20, 2009, we launched a Federation Promotion Membership Campaign for 2009-2010. The Campaign is called “1 + 1 = New Power of BPW”, and is based on each current member bringing one new member into BPW. We announced that some GREAT PRIZES will be drawn amongst both clubs and members for results achieved. Clubs can win a $250 WestJet gift certificate. Members can win a $250 Westjet gift certification; $100 Radio Shack certificate; $100 Staples gift certificate; a framed painting by Dana.

Club Mailings:

• Club Mailings June 2009# 10 and 10b- Highlights include updates on the updated application for the W.O.R.K. (Women Offering Resources and Knowledge) with a deadline of December 31, 2009. BPW Canada is a member Gender Equality Architecture Reform (GEAR) campaign to create a new, stronger and consolidated women's entity at the United Nations. BPW Ontario News - The 63rd Provincial Conference, May 2009 - by Sheila Crook, Delegate

As your Delegates Laura Noble and I are pleased to present the 2009 63rd Annual BPW Ontario Provincial Conference summary report. Click here to view the varioushandoutsprovided across the presentations and workshops.

It was a pleasure to represent BPW London, and I believe you will find that many of the resolution issues/concerns expressed by our membership were very effectively addressed by the BPW London delegation, comprised of Laura Noble, Linda Davis. Norma Yau and myself.

We had a terrific time, on route to to Sault Ste. Marie and back home. In addition, we had a wonderful time reconnecting with BPW Members from across the Province, with our National President and of course engaging in of the social networking that Conference always provides.

Mark your calendars: BPWON 2010 Conference will be in Barrie June 18, 2010 followed by the BPW Canada Nationa Convention on June 19 and June 20, 2010.

Jill Worobec is the new Regional Co-ordinator of North America and the non-Spanish Speaking Countries of the Caribbean. Jill as a Past-President of BPWC and a member of BPW Coquitlam. Doris Hall is one of the region's sub-cordinators.

Summer BPWL BBQ

The Annual BBQ was a great success and a lot of fun and great food as these pictures illustrate. Thank you to our Chef Extraordinaire, Carol Orchard for both opening home and being the chef. Carole cannot do this alone and everyone in attendance helped out including: Gord Barnett as bartender and chief bottle-washer, Don McBrearty & Wes Veenstra as BBQ tenders, Linda Dawson as Treasurer, Winn Barnett as fundraiser and Dawson family and Linda Davis as photographers.

We were also furtunate to have members from BPW Cambridge attend the bbq.

We have scheduled the next bbq for the June 15, 2010 !!

Changing lives of women and children around the world....Mary Kay will donate $1 from the sale of Mary Kay Creme Lipstick (in shades Pink Passion and Gingerbread) to the Mary Kay Ash Charitable Foundation. Proceeds will benefit the Foundation's efforts to support women living with cancer and address violence against women.

Executive Meeting Minutes

Below is a summary of the May, June and August 2009 London Executive Minutes. At the end of each summary there is a link to the complete version of the minutes.

May 2009

Business Arising

• Doris Hall reported that Victor Malerek has agreed to talk at the Human Trafficking event on October 5, 2009.
• Laura Noble has completed the emblem inventory. A spreadsheet has been developed to track the inventory and also outlines the contents of the guest packages and new member kits.
• Linda Davis and Sheila Crook, co-chairs of the 2012 National Convention, are touring potential venues.

Dinner Meeting

• Three new members will be inducted, budget approval and mini-review of the London website will be presented.

Financial Reports

• Financials were presented and approved.

Membership

• Membership is currently at 20 though, Mary McBrearty indicated she is still waiting for several renewals.
• New members will no longer receive printed material at induction vs will receive web links as well as passwords for both Provincial and National Members only sections.

Programs/Projects

• Planning committee meeting set for June 10, 2009.

Resolutions/By-Laws

• Linda Davis has finished reviewing the feedback forms for the both the Provincial and National resolutions and will forward the information to the original clubs etc.

Professional Development

• Sheila Crook requested that Laura Noble review the web sites at future dinner meetings.

Fundraising

• Winn Barnett has items for next dinner meetings draws.

House & Social

• Jeannette Veenstra will be forwarding her materials to new House & Social Chair, Brenda Feenstra.

District & Provincial

• Linda Davis attended a recent BPW Cambridge meeting and Laura Noble and Sheila Crook attended a BPW Kitchener-Waterloo.

National

• Doris Hall reported that the International President and International 1st VP will be attending the National AGM.

International

• Doris Hall has passed her materials onto the new International Chair Colleen Sharen.

June 2009

Business Arising

• Updates on the Human Trafficking event and 2012 National Convention will be presented at the August executive meeting.

Membership

• A review of the forms forwarded to both National and Provincial was completed. The executive clarified who is responsible at the London club for the 2 forms (one is a membership list and one is related to fees). It was decided that the  forms will continue to be the responsibility of the Treasurer. It was agreed that Membership should concentrate on maintaining members, promoting the Club, following-up with guests etc. The Treasurer should remain involved with all tasks pertaining to money/fees. A streamlined process for utilizing these forms and a process for posting of the most current forms on the executive web page is to be issued by Laura.

Fundraising

• General fundraising ideas were discussed: golf tournament, Young BPW event, movie night etc.

District/Provincial

• There will limited amount of Provincial annual reports available since Provincial is encouraging members to view the web-based version.
• Linda Davis reviewed ideas for potential BPW ON emblems: silk scarf, fleece jackets, golf shirts etc

Other

• London BPW Annual report will be finalized and issued by Carole Orchard in September.
• New members of the Executive were recognized by Carole Orchard and Laura Noble will be providing each with a copy of the BPW Canada handbook.

August 2009

Business Arising

• Date has been confirmed for the Human Trafficking event: October 5, 2009. The executive approved a donation to this event.
• Doris Hall and Laura Noble will secure the list of potential people for the position of Young BPW VP as Megan Popovic has stepped down.

Membership

• 27 members.
• Kim Bewsky-Godin has re-joined the club.

Public Relations

• Laura Noble reported she has updated many of the "Londonized" reports/forms that are archived on the Executive resource page of the London web site,  with the BPWL web banner logo.

Programs

• Lianne Armstrong announced the program is set for the coming year.

Young BPW

• Megan Popovic’s resignation was accepted with many thanks for all her work. 

Resolutions

• London club's CRTC resolution was defeated at the National AGM. Linda Davis let our members know that it was defeated at our next Dinner meeting and that if we wished the London BPW club could forward a letter on their own to the CRTC.

Professional Development

• Sheila Crook reported on the International 1 + 1 Membership Drive as well as the partnership between BPW Canada and Workopolis. This partnership will be outlined at the October dinner meeting. Tips on the BPW web sites will continue throught the year.

Fundraising

• A BPWL BBQ recipe book will be developed as a fundraiser.

House & Social

• Brenda Feenstra reported that one restaurant has booked for our 2009-2010 dinner meetings. She also taked to the restaurant about having a varied menu. The larger room has been booked for the December silent auction.

National

• The 2010 National Conference will be held in Barrie, Ontario during the same weekend as the Provincial Conference in Barrie.
