BPW London Sponsors Education Forum on Human Trafficking by Doris Hall 1st VP BPW Canada
 |
 |
Victor Malarek, author of The Natashas – Inside the Global Sex Trade and The John’s: Sex for Sale and the Men Who Buy It.
Victor Malarek is a Toronto-based TV reporter who makes documentaries for W5. He recently published his latest book on human trafficking, The Johns: Sex for Sale and the Men Who Buy It.
|
BPW London was a major sponsor of an educational forum at The University of Western Ontario on Monday, October 5, 2009. It was a huge success with standing room only. Attendance surpassed 200 people, including several men which, according to Malarek, is a very promising sign, as it is the demand side of the business that needs to be addressed if we hope to end sexual exploitation. The program included Victor Malarek as keynote speaker and a panel with John Fenn, founder of The John Schools in Toronto, Trevor Hinds, Program Director for Changing Ways and Marty Van Doren, Superintendent (Retired), Human Trafficking Awareness Coordinator with the R.C.M.P. Topics covered were human trafficking and the law; masculinity and entitlement, and how pornography drives human trafficking.
“Legalizing or decriminalizing the sex trade is a poor policy response to its underlying social forces,” says Malarek. According to him, “90 percent of sex workers worldwide---including those in Canada---did not choose to do it. They are either trafficked, or are tethered to the work by addictions or extreme poverty.” Instead of decriminalization, Malarek suggests a multi-front battle against “modern-day sexual terrorism”: reform the johns; change male attitudes about women; enforce anti-trafficking laws; and give vulnerable women the opportunity to get decently paying jobs outside prostitution.
In part, Malarek blames the proliferation of exploitative prostitution—especially the prostitution of trafficked women from the developing world—on North American male anger at feminism and the equality of women. Men need to stop kidding themselves. Victor Malarek’s book makes it clear that “when men buy sex, they perpetuate the system that enslaves millions of women and children.”
Malarek says that “men who resort to prostitutes for sexual pleasure are losers who should spend more energy on a meaningful relationship rather than blaming women for their sexual failures and turning to prostitutes over whom they can exert their power.”
The event was hosted by the London and Area Anti-Trafficking Group (LAAT) which is working to increase awareness of human trafficking in London and area, and finding ways to help victims of involuntary servitude.

Exciting News from the UN! And a Step Forward for Women Around the World
GEAR (Gender Equality Architecture Reform) has finally been approved by the General Assembly at the United Nations. GEAR is the new entity, a consolidation of four existing women’s entities into a single body at the United Nations. The four entities to be consolidated are:
- U.N. Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM)
- The Office of the Special Advisor on Gender Issues
- The U.N. Division for the Advance of Women
- The International Research and Training Institute for the Advancement of Women (INSTRAW)
The General Assembly has expressed strong and unanimous support in adopting a resolution on September 14th, 2009, to create this new entity which will be headed by a new Under Secretary-General. Women and their allies have been advocating for this consolidation for three years to provide a stronger, better resourced agency on gender equality of women’s empowerment. GEAR is expected to be operation by the time of the Beijing + 15 Review at the Committee on the Status of Women in March 2010.
Member states must also address in a timely fashion all the outstanding issues required for the entity to begin operations, including the mechanisms for governance and oversight. Donor countries need to pledge the substantial funding ($1 billion) to support the proposed strong field operation that the entity must have to be successful in fulfilling the promises made by governments and the UN to the world’s women. Women around the world have waited for the United Nations and member states to fulfill the promises made since the first International Women’s Year in 1975, the adoption of the Convention on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) thirty years ago.
