2012 National Convention, London, ON Update - The Title by Sheila Crook and Linda Davis: BPW 2012 Co-Chairs

The BPW 2012 Winning Title is ... "Celebrate into the Future"

Special thanks to everyone who took time to participate in the "Name the 2012 National Convention Survey". Your creative feedback helped to streamline the draft concepts presented and provided a wealth of ideas to be incorporated into the actual Convention Program of events.

Celebrate into the Future very effectively captures the essence of your collective feedback and will work very well with Doris Hall's President's two year theme BPW -Yours, Mine, Ours to Create (starting in June 2010). However, what is really exciting is the synergy that your feedback created and the many additional ideas that will be incorporated across the convention program and special events. As suggested by survey respondents the invitation to Convention will include an inviting "Come Celebrate into the Future". In addition, just to list a few, you will find that many of the tweaked terms such as Trail Blazers; Lead, Learn, and Live; Strive, Share and Play; Road to Resolution and Look out Future HereWe Come are expected to be incorporated in some fashion into the convention program and special events.

We are confident a graphic artist can now create a vivid image that will see the Convention Title leap from the page as it conveys the concepts associated with celebrating our contributions to the advancement of women through time, while simultaneously inspiring a fresh new portal to the future.

The creative spontaneity of BPW London members is certain to make the 2012 National Convention one that will be long remembered.

We thank you for your passion and look forward to the excitement of the next two years.

BPWL Resolution Report by Linda Davis, BPWL Resolutions Chair

The London Club is currently working on the following resolutions:

  • Sisters In Spirit funding– The Native Women’s Association of Canada (NWAC) is working in collaboration with other Aboriginal women’s organizations and the federal government to improve the human rights of Aboriginal women and address the violence facing Aboriginal women, in particular the high rates of missing and murdered Aboriginal women in Canada. This is a five-year research, education and policy initiative done through activities in various areas and will address violence against Aboriginal (First Nations, Inuit and Métis) women, particularly racialized and/or sexualized violence, that is, violence perpetrated against Aboriginal women because of their gender and Aboriginal identity. This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it is working on a potential resolution to ask for increased governments funding in support of this initiative. For more information visit http://www.nwac-hq.org/en/background.html.

  • Changes to the Family Law Act – On Nov. 24, 2008, Ontario Attorney General Chris Bentley introduced a multi-faceted family law reform package aimed at better protecting the rights of women, children and families in times of family breakdown. These proposed changes were prompted by the death of 7-year-old Katelynn Sampson in August of 2008. This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it is working with, local lawyer and former BPWLmember Mandy Heyninck, to investigate this issue.

  • Access to health care for the marginalized population – many people living at or below the poverty line do not have a regular doctor and are therefore forced to attend walk-in clinics or emergency rooms. A pilot project in London saw Nurses and Nurse Practitioners with offices located in subsidized housing areas and as a result this population was able to meet their health care needs and be pro active therefore, reducing the overall strain on the health care system. The funding for this project has not been renewed and This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it is working on a resolution to address this and other marginalized population’s access to adequate health care.

  • The fight against the legalization of prostitution – On October 6, lawyers for Terri-Jean Bedford, Valerie Scott and Amy Lebovitch argued for Canada's current prostitution laws to be thrown out. Currently the Criminal Code of Canada prohibits communication for the purpose of prostitution. It also prohibits keeping a common bawdy house for the purpose of prostitution. The three women involved in the case are calling for prostitution to be decriminalized.

This is a fight that has been fought before but with the newest big business of human trafficking, decriminalizing prostitution may make Canada a haven for human trafficking. In the countries that have already legalized prostitution the average age of prostitutes has dropped so younger women are being entrapped into this way of life and human trafficking has increased to meet the demand This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it and This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it will be working on a resolution against the legalization of prostitution, to address this issue.

BPW Canada’s lobbying efforts on Employment Insurance by Doris Hall, BPWC 1st VP

Since 1948, BPW members in Canada have been lobbying for better access to Employment Insurance benefits for women. Resolutions have been passed asking for a complete review of the Unemployment Insurance Act, for equality in claims for married women and elimination of sex discrimination. We have lobbied to include benefits for part time workers, for maternity benefits and for business owners.

In 2002, BPW Saskatoon and Montreal sponsored a resolution to provide access to employment insurance benefits for business owners and self-employed women. Such an amendment to the Employment Insurance Act would allow access to maternity and parental leave, as well as compassionate leave for caregivers.

“The Harper government plans to introduce legislation this month to allow self-employed Canadians to access maternity and parental benefits under the federal employment insurance program,” according to Shawn McCarthy, The Globe and Mail, November 1, 2009. He states that, “This legislation would allow the self-employed to enroll in the EI program and pay only the employee’s share of the premium.”

CPP Changes by BPWL MemberRose Kuchynski of Johnston & Company

You Wanted to Know...

Should I apply for my Canadian Pension Plan (CPP) benefits now? I've heard there were changes to the Canada Pension Plan in the latest federal budget. What are they and how does this affect me?

What other CPP Benefits should I be aware of?

Finance Canada has announced proposed changes to the Canada Pension Plan. If approved, these changes will impactthose retiring after 2010. If you already receive CPP benefits, however, these changes will not affect you. The following summary explains the current CPP benefits and the proposed changes.

Johnston & Company Recommendation:

We advise eligible clients to take advantage of early CPP before these changes are enacted. We cannot predictthe future in terms of our longevity or the economy and the CPP plan itself...so, as the saying goes: "A bird in the hand..." These are situations where delaying could be beneficial. Contact This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it to review your unique circumstances.

What if I take early retirement CPP benefits before age 65?

Current adjustments reduce early pensions by 0.5% for each month of early retirement, or 6% per full year. Starting in 2012, the proposed pension reduction will gradually be increased over 5 years to 0.6% for each month of early retirement or 7.2% per each full year. So, if you begin taking your pension at age 60, your pension is currently reduced by 30%. Under the proposed changes, by 2016, the reduction will be 36%.
