President's Message by Carole Orchard

caroleorchard

As I reflect on the recognition of achievements of our members over the two years of my presidency I am left in some awe at their contributions, and dedication. Sheila Crook and Doris Hall were both recognized for their leadership, the former by BPW Canada and the latter by our Provincial government, we also had several members recognized for their volunteer contributions by the Ontario government including – Norma Yau, Sandy Pearce, Doris Hall, Eva Main, Sheila Crook and Susan Dill. And I learned about the respect that our club has because of its members’ contributions. It is highly recognized within BPW Canada. We have led the way in moving key issues affecting women to the forefront with many resolutions, some remaining at the Provincial level, other at the Federal level and still more being taken by our Canadian colleagues to the International level.

But I also feel somewhat frustrated by our society which continues to undervalue the role of women in making our country what it has become. I recently found a short item in the London Free Press and I quote from it...“Canadian men on average get paid more than 20% more than their female colleagues, giving the country one of the highest gender gaps among the 30 OECD nations” and later an item discussing the Quebec decision to ban immigrant women from wearing face coverings with a challenge (from a woman) about the more foundational issue of why their husbands require them to wear such coverings when they wear the attire of the remainder of the society. The question arises as to how our society values women and our contributions to its nationhood? Is not the pay we are awarded part of such recognition?

Within Canada we have seen our current federal government systematically take away funding for programs that support women – Status of Women is only one example. At the same time they have funded treatment facilities for women who have been abused but fail to fund those programs that focus on the prevention of such abuse to begin with.

As I also consider the role of women in my own International work I have been struck by the suppression they experience within their cultural mores while contributing through subservient roles to families. There is significant research showing that it is women who determine the health of their families, but government policies consistently still focus on males as the breadwinners and their value. The question I am left with is when will our own society truly move to gender and social equality for all? Margaret Mead stated “if we are to achieve a richer culture – one rich in contrasting values – we must recognize the whole gamut of human possibilities, and so weave a less arbitrary social fabric, one in which each diverse human gift will find a fitting place” (Great Quotes from Great Women, 1997, p. 42).

There is still much to do to enhance our networking with each other and to reach out to those who have similar goals as ours. We can contribute to reducing this ongoing gender pay inequality and society undervaluing of women by taking opportunities to lobby through our resolution process to change the current state of women’s value in the workplace.

I now leave the presidency of our club in the very capable hands of Laura Noble and want to thank all of you who have been such phenomenal supports to me over these past two years. I look forward to continuing to be part of our exciting club!
