President's Message - Empowering/New Exec by Laura Noble

As I was approaching the start of my 2-year term as BPWL President, I thought about what BPW means to me. The word "Empowering" kept coming to mind. This word describes BPW and it's potential not only in London but worldwide. The connection between the word "Empowering" and BPW was further brought to me attention with the BPW International 80th Anniversary logo stating: 80 Years of Empowering Women.

My next step was to further look at BPW and how EMPOWERING fits. Below is the result.

E Equality
M Motivation/Mentoring
P Professional
O Ongoing Support and Friendship
W Women Working for Working Women
E Economic, Employment, Social Improvement for all Women
R Resolutions
I International

I look forward to working with all members in the coming year and thank the new executive for volunteering to serve on the Board.

Human Trafficking Update - by Doris Hall

Report on Human Trafficking in Canada 2009-10

United States Department of State, Trafficking in Persons Report 2009 which is published in June classified Canada as a Tier 1.  It states that Canada is a source, transit and destination country for men, women and children trafficked for the purposes of commercial sexual exploitation and forced labor.  Canadian women and girls, many of whom are aboriginal, are trafficked internally for commercial sexual exploitation.  Foreign women and children, primarily from Asia and Eastern Europe, are trafficked to Canada for commercial sexual exploitation, but victims from Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean have also been identified.  Many trafficking victims are from Thailand, Cambodia, Malaysia, Vietnam, China, South Korea, the Philippines, Russia and Ukraine.

Canada is also a source country for child sex tourists, who travel abroad to engage in sex acts with minors.  Canada is reported to be a destination country for sex tourists, particularly from the United States.

The Government of Canada fully complies with the minimum standards for the elimination of trafficking.  During the past year, the Canadian government maintained strong victim protection and prevention efforts, and demonstrated modest progress in prosecuting and punishing trafficking offenders, securing five trafficking-specific convictions during the past year.  Law enforcement personnel reported difficulties with securing adequate punishments against offenders.

Recommendations for Canada:  Intensify efforts to investigate and prosecute trafficking offenses and convict and sentence trafficking offenders; increase use of proactive law enforcement techniques to investigate trafficking cases, including allegations of labor trafficking; increase efforts to investigate and prosecute Canadians suspected of committing child sex tourism crimes abroad; provide greater protection and services for foreign trafficking victims; improve coordination among national and provincial governments on law enforcement and victim services; and improve data collection.

  • On March 30, 2010 Victoria, BC's club was chartered. Founded in 1921, Victoria and was one of the founding clubs of the Canadian Federation in 1930. In 2008, due to membership decline Victoria turned in it's charter but in 2 years has been re-chartered. Welcome Victoria.

  • Feminist History Society launches series:

History has long favoured those who write it – so that’s what we’re doing!

This year, to mark the 50th anniversary of second wave feminism activism in Canada, women from across the country are rallying to document our struggles and successes.

The non-profit Feminist History Society will publish a multi-volume series of books depicting the richness and diversity of Canadian feminist activity between 1960 and 2010. Written by many different authors, and presented in a variety of formats, the collection will reflect our multi-talented and eclectic movement.

This unique, hardcover collection will be beautifully designed and bound as a feminist series and published over the next decade. It will be sold in a “book of the year” format, with the first volume – a rich and varied collection of feminist "click" stories, edited by Marguerite Andersen – due for release in October 2010. The second book, to follow in 2011, will be a volume of reflections on the past and future by celebrated columnist and activist Michele Landsberg.

Norma Yau & Her Music and Strawberry and Champagne Fundraiser by Norma Yau

I know at the dinner meetings I often talk about my choir concerts coming up, but the rest of the story goes like this:

I started singing when I was very young and although I thought I would be a ballet dancer (what young girl doesn’t want to be one), we couldn’t afford those lessons so I got piano lessons at the age of 8.  After one year I was fortunate enough to change teachers to a woman who changed my life.  Christina Valad was a very special teacher – she taught life lessons as well as piano.  But she made us work hard.  I did solo work, duets with a now lifelong friend, concertos, was fortunate enough to play with an orchestra by the time I was in my teens and of course did the Stratford Kiwanis Festival every year.  I passed the Grade 10 Royal Toronto Conservatory examination before I finished high school.

In public school I sang in choirs and solos and even was Cinderella in a school show. Through my teens I continued in the church choir but got away from vocal performances other than weddings, unless I was playing the organ for them. I also started teaching piano at the age of 14. For a few years Christina ran a camp that allowed me exposure to quite a few different instruments including the viola, trumpet (which I also studied for 1 year in high school), oboe, guitar, and ukulele.

At Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo I studied music and graduated in 1980 with an Honours Bachelor of Music.  Piano was my major but again I was fortunate to sing with the Chapel Choir and a wonderful conductor/composer named Barrie Cabena.  He taught me love of what was only the tip of very varied choral works. Once I was married it was just the church choir, and the weddings or other church services.

When I moved to London in 1989, the church choir wasn’t quite enough so I started looking around for another place to sing.  In 1991 I saw an ad for the London Symphonic Chorus.  When I called they said rehearsals were every Monday night.  At the time I was too busy but the next year I auditioned.  I sang about two lines of an oratorio piece called “Elijah” for Gerry Fagan then he proceeded to take me through his house to show me antiques from the place where I grew up near Stratford.  Marlene, his wife, told me as I left that I had made the choir (they never talked to each other so that was my first instance of how they could communicate without words).

The first year I was in the choir I sang “Messiah” four times – each time a very different performance.  I started in September with the Symphonic Chorus, but after performing Benjamin Britton’s “War Requiem” for London’s 150th anniversary special performance conducted by David Willcocks of Great Britian (the Queen Mother’s private musician), Gerry asked me to join the Gerald Fagan Singers.  I could not keep up both choirs as I was working full time and teaching piano several nights a week, so after that Christmas I was solely in the Fagan Singers.  The music was challenging and sometimes difficult, but very varied.  We did then and continue to do classical repertoire, folk songs, cabaret music and new music written specifically for us.  Again we work hard, but laugh a lot at the rehearsals and I have made many friends through the choir.

normaphoto_web

I have been part of the taping of 4 CDs, “Messiah”, “Songs Abroad” which was the music we did on a European tour in 1997, “Nice and Easy” which is some of the cabaret music we performed for many years as a show at Centennial Hall and now continue in a fundraiser concert called Strawberries and Champagne, and “A Trillium Christmas” which was a compilation of some of the great Ontario compositions we sang for a few years in Advent concerts under the same name. We are just completing another CD of a cappella songs that are truly beautiful – most religious but some secular songs as well.
My music has taken me on 4 tours to Europe since 1997.  At the age of 40 I decided I was old enough to start voice lessons and have continued them since.  Music has opened many doors to new friendships.  I now also belong to the Exeter Community Choir and participate in the church choir at Trivitt Anglican as well as my home church in London at St. Ansgar Lutheran.

I love music in all its forms, even rock and jazz, although I have to say a lot of country and western is lower on the list.  I do not play as much as I used to, but have a beautiful 1917 Steinway Grand Piano in my living room that constantly tempts me to forget about other work that needs doing.  And I sing probably every day - with the radio, by myself or at rehearsals.  Joy in my life comes through music and I love to share it.

Strawberry & Champagne Fundraiser

June 13th at the lovely home of Hank and Anne Vander Lann at 2617 Old Victoria Road from 2-4 pm.

Prices are cheaper than previously at $50 per couple and $30 single ticket.

We have some great Cabaret music planned – it has been quite awhile since we have sang these “oldies” and we have a couple of “new” ones to add.  And again our Celebrity Choir will prove some excitement (and probably laughs since they won’t all be “singers”).

It gives you a chance to come out and dress in your garden party best, hear some fun music (instead of classical fare) from us, visit with us, partake of champagne, strawberries, wine, cheese, and sweets, and purchase something nice from our select silent auction items.

Let me know if I can get you some tickets.  I would love to see you there. This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .
