Gaining Our Voice by Carole Orchard, Resolutions Chair

A new approach to development of resolutions will be trialed this year.  Members have frequently stated the reason they joined our club is because of our commitment to addressing issues that affect women.  At the same time, the normal turnaround time for resolution development, approval, and submission is from September to January – a timeline that prevents members from fully participating in learning how to write good resolutions and then applying this knowledge to create a resolution that meets BPW’s standards.  So this year we will be introducing a program that allows a full two club years to complete each resolution.  In this way it is hoped that more of our members will participate in the resolution formulation and critiquing process,  resulting in high quality products that can be acted on at the provincial, national, and potentially international levels.  To accomplish this goal we are integrating a personal development process with our club resolution evolution activity.  The sequence for this plan was presented at the September dinner meeting.

Each BPWL newsletter will have regular column titled ‘Gaining our Voice’.  The column will provide a lead into the aspect of resolution development that will be stressed at our forthcoming dinner meeting and provide an ongoing listing of topics deemed of significance to women that resolutions can be developed to address.

Members will be invited to join a Women’s Issue Group to work together on development of one resolution on a topic of importance to each group member.  Moreover, each Women’s Issue Group will be provided with a club mentor who has extensive expertise in resolution development to provide advice as the Women’s Issue Group moves along the way to completing their group’s resolution.  New Women’s Issue Groups can be formed at any time in the year around new issues as they emerge.  The learning component builds from the excellent work on resolution single point lessons developed by Sheila Crook a couple of years ago.

At the September meeting, members were introduced to the resolution process – Single Point Lesson: Generating Resolution Topics.  Included in this session were: the introduction of what resolutions are comprised of; who can suggest resolution topics; and the process for developing a resolution.  To obtain a copy of the single point lesson members can download it from the BPW Ontario web site (note your member login will be required to access the Single Point Lessons).

Osteoporosis Advocacy Workshop in London -November 30, 2010

If you are concerned about Osteoporosis care in Ontario and would like to learn how to make that care better for yourself or someone you know and love, this workshop is for you!

In Ontario, the government has decided not to publicly-fund the newer treatments for osteoporosis, known as the non-oral medications.  For those people who cannot tolerate the traditional oral medications, access to these newer drugs is critical to their care.  The purpose of this workshop is to explain this issue further and to walk through a package of tools that will enable attendees to take personal action to help make a difference.

If you are one of the many people worried about the government restricting access to medications for osteoporosis and want to help make a change, please join us on November 30th.  People living with osteoporosis, caregivers, family members - everyone is invited to attend to learn how to take action and make a difference.

To confirm your attendance for this important workshop, please RSVP via This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it or by telephone at 1-866-348-8828 ext. 31
